About EMMT-Based out of Nelson, British Columbia, Elephant Mountain Music Theatre strives to bring major productions to local theatres, starring local talent.
EMMT started in the fall of 2013, with its first production being "La Vie Boheme". This show brought in musical talent from across Canada, all leading up to the spring 2014 production of Jonathan Larson's Tony Award-winning Broadway hit, "Rent". EMMT has been awarded a Columbia Basin Trust grant to tour this production in the East Kootenays in November 2014. About the show-Rent is a rock musical loosely based on Puccini's opera La boheme. It tells the story of a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists in 1989 New York City. They are dealing with poverty, addiction, and harsh personal truths at the height of the AIDS epidemic. The story captures the highs and lows of their lives as they realize their "actual reality".
The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop production in New York in 1994. The production opened at the New York Theatre Workshop on January 25, 1996. The show's creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly of an aortic dissection the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1996, and the show was a hit. The production moved into Broadway's larger Nederlander Theatre in April of the same year. On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won four Tony Awards, among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year fun of 5123 performances. Rent was the tenth longest-running Broadway show at the time. The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions. In 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members.
