Rita Collinson- Production Manager
This crazy cat lady grew up on a sheep farm in Canyon, B.C. (just outside of Creston). While at school there, Rita was very active in music lessons, Girl Guides, and band (flute and percussion), and can tell “band camp” stories with the best of them! From 1996 to 2001, Rita attended the University of Lethbridge, majoring in neuroscience, and then moved up to the blustery city of Edmonton to study massage therapy and become an Emergency Medical Responder. In the midst of all this schoolwork, she found time to actively participate in the U of L Wind Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and Vox Musica Choral Society. Since moving to Edmonton, Rita has produced Kevin Armstrong’s 2011 and 2012 hit Fringe shows Opera for Heathens and Opera(as it wasn’t intended), and took on the role of Assistant Production Manager for Nelson Community Opera’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2012. She is honored to be a part of this production, and is touched by the generosity of the people of the Kootenays in their support of Rent.

Victoria "Vicki" Valks- Choreographer and Ensemble
Although I had grown up singing and dancing, my first foray into musical theatre happened in the early 70's (yes I know how old that makes me) when Notre Dame University was in Nelson. I performed in Hello Dolly, Anne of Green Gables and Cabaret. They were some of the best moments in my life at that time. Then real life happened and my musical theatre career came to a giant halt. Flash forward to 2012...with my life in a very different place I decided it was time to try it again. Along came Jesus Christ Superstar. Once again it was an absolutely wonderful experience. I felt blessed to be part of an incredibly talented cast. So now I'm hooked. I am now part of this much smaller but just as incredibly talented team and I am thrilled to be not only a part of the cast but having my first go-around in the production end as the choreographer. An astounding amount of work has gone into this community theatre production of Rent and I am proud to be a part of it. "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss"

She’s so happy to have the opportunity to perform Maureen, in Jonathan Larson’s RENT. This is music that brings light to her heart. She hopes you enjoy tonight’s show and intends on putting her heart and soul into bringing RENT to life. Oh, and she’s super friendly and won’t bite, so please, do say hi!

Birkley Valks- Ensemble
Born and raised in Nelson, I've always been a band geek. I just turned 30 and have been looking for further ways to challenge myself. The last time I was on stage was as a pirate in my elementary school production of Peter Pan. I'm so grateful that my first adult theatrical production was with such an amazing cast. I can usually be found singing karaoke or painting homes around town. There's a first time for anything, and as far as I'm concerned, this is a first that will get checked off my bucket list. "No day but today" is a phrase that resonates with me, and I hope it does the same for everyone who comes to see the show. Expand your horizons. You never know what can happen!
